This plum garden spreads across the hilly terrain of Hikari City (光市) and is one of Yamaguchi Prefecture's (山口県) leading plum-blossom spots, with about 2,000 trees of roughly 100 varieties planted here. Even outside plum-blossom season, the spacious grounds are well maintained, and as you walk the trails you can look out from the hilltop over the Suo Sea (周防灘) and Ushijima Island (牛島) floating offshore. Gazing from the heights during the day at the very sea where fireworks will launch tonight gives you a sense that the day's story is all connected. There's plenty of shade, so even in the summer daytime you can choose shaded paths to walk, which families will appreciate. The grounds are spacious, so it's just the right amount of time to leisurely enjoy the first half of the walking trail without rushing.
Tips
About a 10-minute drive from Hikari Station (光駅) as a guide. Admission is free, so it's easy to stop by. Summer sunlight is strong, so be sure to bring a hat and something to drink. Parking is available on the grounds. On the day of the fireworks festival, parking around the venue fills up from the evening onward, so it's reassuring to plan ahead for where to park at this time.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. Around midday the shaded trails are pleasant and the sea view is clear
