Stand at the Gateway to Dewa Sanzan, at the Entrance of the Cedar-Lined Approach with Over 400-Year-Old Trees

About this spot

A vermillion-painted gate standing at the entrance to Mt. Haguro, a sacred site of ascetic Buddhism known by the collective name Dewa Sanzan (Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, Mt. Yudono). Passing through the Zuishinmon Gate, a stone-paved approach begins, lined on both sides by massive cedar trees over 400 years old, designated as Japan's Special Natural Monuments. Stone steps numbering 2,446 continue to the mountain peak, and simply standing at the entrance of this approach allows you to tangibly feel the spiritual atmosphere of mountain faith traditions continuing since ancient times. The strong summer sunlight is blocked by the great cedars, and the area around the gate becomes a cool, otherworldly space. This spot epitomizes the rich natural and cultural heritage of Shonai, recognized as a UNESCO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System site.

Tips
