Atarazawa Station (左沢駅), the terminus of the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line, is the gateway to Oe Town (大江町), a water town that flourished through river transport on the Mogami River (最上川). Stepping out of the station, you're greeted by the clear waters of the Mogami River and the greenery of the surrounding hills, scenery typical of a Yamagata summer. This is your first view of the Mogami River, the setting for tonight's fireworks display and lantern floating, so it may be a good spot for a commemorative photo to mark the start of the day. The station front sits at the quiet center of town, letting you begin the course in a calm atmosphere. Nearby, a promenade runs along the Mogami River, where you can walk while feeling the flow of the river up close.

Tips

From Yamagata Station (山形駅), transfer onto the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line toward Atarazawa; by car, it's about 40 minutes from central Yamagata City (山形市). On the day of the fireworks display, parking lots near the venue tend to fill up from the evening onward, so it's a good idea to check parking locations during the day.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. Checking the flow of the Mogami River in the bright daytime makes the lantern floating at night feel even more moving
