The Suigo Oe Summer Festival Lantern Floating and Fireworks Display combines a ceremony of floating lanterns on the Mogami River (最上川) in memory of the war dead on August 15, the anniversary of the end of the war, with a fireworks display, making it a signature summer festival of Oe Town (大江町). The light of countless lanterns drifting across the water's surface quietly and beautifully colors the Mogami River at night. When the fireworks launch begins at 19:00, the flickering light of the lanterns and the light of the fireworks overlap above the Mogami River, creating a uniquely fantastical scene you can't experience at other fireworks displays. Fireworks launched from the Mogami River, surrounded by Yamagata's rural hills, bloom large in the night sky while reflecting on the water's surface, blossoming into vivid flowers of light in the clear air of a summer night. Check Oe Town's official announcements in advance for whether the event will go ahead in case of bad weather. Roads in the area get congested after the event ends, so it's a good idea to wait a while after the fireworks finish before heading out. Some areas of the riverbed have little lighting, so be sure to bring a small light. Check departure times for return transportation, whether by car or public transit, in advance.

Best time to visit

Timed to the event hours of 19:00-20:50. From just after sunset, when the lanterns begin to spread across the water, until the finale of the fireworks, it's hard to look away
