About this spot
The Matsue Suigosai Lake Fireworks Festival is San'in's largest fireworks display, with around 21,000 shells launched from over Lake Shinji (宍道湖) coloring the night sky and the lake's surface at once. The 'upside-down fireworks' reflected on the still lake surface are a stunning sight unique to a lake, unlike anything you'd experience at the seaside or on land. The distinctive way the sound echoes off the water and the surrounding mountains adds tremendous power, and cheers from the crowd spread along the shore each time a shell bursts. In the finale's rapid-fire barrage, the whole lake seems wrapped in light, on a breathtaking scale. With the night view of Matsue's castle town as a backdrop, these 45 minutes in which the sky and water of the water capital are dyed in fireworks colors make for an unforgettable sight, fitting as the climax of this whole day.

Turn this into a day plan with stall time includedTips
The festival runs both Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, each day from 20:15 to 21:00. It may be canceled or postponed in bad weather, so check the official Matsue Suigosai announcements for the day's status. Afterward, the route back from the Lake Shinji shore toward Matsue Station gets very crowded. It's more comfortable to linger a while at the lakeshore to enjoy the afterglow after the finale, then head home once the crowds have thinned. Some areas underfoot are dark, so carrying a small light is reassuring.
