About this spot

A beautiful sandy beach within walking distance north of Nima Sand Museum, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Beaches by the Ministry of the Environment. Its most distinctive feature is the "singing sand" – walking on the beach produces a squeaking sound. This occurs because the quartz sand is kept in a clean state, making it a known valuable location throughout Japan. The contrast between the white sandy beach and the blue Sea of Japan is beautiful, and a summer afternoon walk in the sea breeze is a refreshing experience. Testing with your family whether the singing sand produces sound as you walk is part of the fun.

Tips

About 10 minutes on foot from Nima Sand Museum. For the singing sand to produce sound, the sand should be dry; walking on the sand above the waterline makes the sound more likely to occur. Please refrain from taking sand away for singing sand conservation purposes. While swimming is possible, please check the designated swimming areas and time periods with local information.

Best time to visit

Takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. On sunny afternoons, the sand dries and the singing sand sounds are more easily heard.
