One of only twelve surviving original castle keeps in all of Japan, built by Todō Takatora in 1601 and later renovated by Date Munetoshi. The three-story castle tower perched atop Castle Mountain (城山) is elegantly proportioned despite its modest size, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Climbing to the top and entering the keep, the uppermost floor offers sweeping views of Uwajima Bay and the surrounding city, allowing you to spot the very waters where tonight's fireworks will bloom. This is the perfect place to start your day in Uwajima, experiencing the history and geography of the castle town firsthand.

宇和島の夏の一大祭典「うわじま牛鬼まつり」のフィナーレを飾る海上打上花火です。2026年7月22日(水)20時から20時30分の30分間、宇和島湾の夜空に約7,000発が次々と打ち上がります。穏やかな内海である宇和島湾の水面に映り込む花火の光は、海上打上ならではの美しさ。牛鬼まつりの名の由来となった郷土の祭り文化と、南予の海の風景が重なる夏の夜のクライマックスを、波の音とともに堪能しましょう。

Tips

荒天時の開催可否は宇和島市の公式情報で確認を。終了後は湾岸周辺と宇和島駅が大変混雑します。フィナーレ後は少し時間をおいてから駅へ向かう時間差帰宅がおすすめ。足元が暗い場所があるため、スマートフォンのライトを用意しておきましょう。

Tips

About 15 minutes on foot from Uwajima Station; approximately 10 minutes of steep stone steps from the castle mountain trailhead to the keep. Admission is 200 yen for adults. In summer, bring a hat and water as the sun is strong. There is a parking area near the trailhead.
