The Port of Naoetsu is a historic harbor facing the Sea of Japan, lined with local restaurants and food stalls. Secure a solid dinner before the fireworks at eateries serving dishes made with fresh Sea of Japan seafood, or at the food stalls and vendors set up during the Gion Festival period. Standing on the harbor's breakwater or seawall, you'll see the sun setting into the Sea of Japan and the horizon glowing red right before you. This contrast between the sunset sea and the fireworks night about to begin is one of the great pleasures of this course. Getting a sense of the surrounding area, including restroom locations, during the evening will help you move around with confidence at night.
Tips
Food stalls and restaurants get crowded in the evening on the day of the fireworks festival. It's recommended to finish your meal around 4:00 p.m., before the lines form. Pick up food and drinks from a convenience store early (they tend to sell out quickly at night). The viewing area at the mouth of the Sekikawa River is accessible on foot from the harbor, so gather your belongings before moving.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 30 minutes. This is when the Sea of Japan sunset is at its most beautiful.
