About this spot

This Niigata prefectural park spreads along the west side of the mouth of the Sekikawa River (関川), offering sweeping views of the Sea of Japan. It was developed as part of a project to restore a rich sandy beach and make the coastline a more welcoming space, and it's equipped with a plaza, a dome-shaped gazebo, changing rooms, and a shower tower, with access down to the beach from the park. On a clear day, you can watch the sun set into the Sea of Japan. In the evening of the Naoetsu Gion Festival Grand Fireworks Display, viewers begin gathering around the river mouth, so spread out a picnic sheet and enjoy a relaxed wait for the show while feeling the night breeze coming off the sea.

Tips

Spot-claiming begins early on the day of the fireworks festival. To secure a good viewing spot, it's reassuring to arrive by the early part of 6:00 p.m. at the latest. The temporary restrooms in the area get crowded, so use them early. Since the area near the river mouth has some gravel and grassy sections, a thick sheet or cushion will make it more comfortable.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The gradient of colors in the sky right after sunset, along with the pleasant night breeze off the sea, make this a wonderful time.
