Ashikaga School (足利学校)
Flow of the course
About this spot
Japan's oldest school, which Francisco Xavier famously described to the world in the Muromachi period as 'the greatest university in Bandō, the most renowned throughout Japan.' The thatched-roof abbot's quarters and zen garden create a tranquil setting, where visitors can freely attempt kanji tests and classical Chinese text recitation that captivate children. The 'Gakkō Gate' at the entrance is a classic photo spot.
Tips
The reception area provides 'admission certificates' as commemorative keepsakes that children love. The water-scooping experience with the 'Tilting Vessel' becomes an exciting activity when all three generations take a turn.
Best time to visit
Plan for 1 hour. Early afternoon is a quiet window between tour groups.
