About this spot

A municipal botanical garden located at the tip of the Karamasu Peninsula jutting into Lake Biwa, dedicated to water plants. The park's signature water lily collection is among the finest in Japan, and from early summer through summer, the pond is ablaze with blooms in countless colors. The Lotus Hall greenhouse allows year-round observation of tropical water lilies and other aquatic plants, so visitors can encounter flowers regardless of season. Beyond water lilies, flowerbeds are arranged seasonally, offering a different landscape each visit. The gently sloping paths overlooking Lake Biwa are easy to walk, making it perfect for flower-viewing strolls even with small children. Just steps away from the Lake Biwa Museum next door, it serves as an ideal starting point for a day combining nature and learning.

Tips

About 25 minutes by bus from the west exit of JR Kusatsu Station toward the Lake Biwa Museum; get off at "Mizu no Mori." The location is easily accessible by car with parking available. Most water lilies open in the morning and close in the afternoon, so arriving right at opening time is recommended. The flat pathways are easy to navigate with a stroller, and the Lake Biwa Museum is just a few minutes' walk away.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1.5 hours. Early morning, right after opening, is when the water lilies are most beautiful as they open.
