Held at Karasuma Peninsula Lawn Square (烏丸半島芝生広場), Symphonic Starmine is a fireworks display staged against the vast surface of Lake Biwa and the night sky. Viewed from the tip of the peninsula, where little blocks the view, the fireworks fill your entire field of vision, and the bands of light reflected on the calm lake surface add a distinctive beauty. The booming launches echoing off the mountains of Omi (近江) and the night breeze crossing the lake create a fireworks-viewing experience unique to summer in Shiga. As the name suggests, the choreography set to music is also a highlight, and the moments when the fireworks and sound become one are truly like a scene from a symphony.

Tips

Be sure to check the event's official information in advance for the start time and any cancellation or postponement due to bad weather. After the show ends, everyone leaves at once, so the parking lot and special buses get crowded. If you linger at the lawn square for a while after the fireworks finish to enjoy the afterglow before moving, you can more easily avoid the peak congestion. It's dark underfoot on the way back, so a small light will be reassuring.
