About this spot

An ancient temple of the Tendai Buddhist sect located in Matsuo-ji, Aizushi Town, known as one of the three Koto Mountains. According to tradition, the main hall (National Treasure) was founded by the Buddhist priest Gyoki in 741 at the request of Emperor Shomu, and the temple possesses many Important Cultural Properties. The approach is lined with moss-covered stone steps, with stone Jizo statues holding pinwheels and arhat statues standing on either side, creating a uniquely serene atmosphere. Even in summer, the air beneath the tree canopy remains cool, and ascending the stone steps offers a sense of entering another world. The temple's celebrated landscape garden is also noteworthy, offering beautiful seasonal views.

愛知川祇園納涼祭のクライマックスを飾る花火大会です。愛知川の河川敷から打ち上がる花火は、川面に光を映しながら夏の夜空に大きく開きます。地域の夏祭りとして長く地元に親しまれてきたこの大会は、屋台のにぎわいやお囃子の音とともに楽しむ、近江の夏の風物詩です。川沿いの広い河川敷でレジャーシートを広げてゆっくり観覧でき、家族みなさんで夏の夜を満喫するのにぴったりの雰囲気があります。フィナーレの花火が川面に映える瞬間は、この1日のかけがえないクライマックスです。

開催時間は事前に愛荘町の公式情報で確認してください(当日の詳細スケジュールは変更になる場合があります)。荒天時の開催可否も公式発表で確認を。終了後は帰宅客が集中するため、フィナーレ後は少し時間をおいてから移動するとスムーズです。足元が暗くなるため、小さなライトを持参すると安心です。

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from Aichi River Station; parking available. Admission fee is ¥600 for adults (including garden access). Stone steps continue throughout the grounds, so please wear comfortable shoes. Allow about an hour to view the garden beyond the main hall. On the return, descend the stone steps slowly, enjoying each arhat statue along the way.
