This city museum specializes in the history and culture of Amakusa's hidden Christians and stands on a hill not far from Hondo Port (本渡港). It has rich exhibits related to the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region (長崎と天草地方の潜伏キリシタン関連遺産), registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2018, carefully conveying the record of faith of people who survived the era when Christianity was banned, alongside genuine artifacts. There are also video displays and models, making it easy to follow and worth seeing for everyone from children who have learned about hidden Christians in history class to adults. Starting your Amakusa visit here adds depth to your afternoon stroll through the port town. The museum is air-conditioned, making it an ideal place to escape the midsummer midday heat as well.
Tips
About a 15-minute walk from Hondo Bus Center (本渡バスセンター), or about a 5-minute drive. Admission is around 300 yen for adults and 150 yen for children (please check). Parking is available. The museum shop also carries books and goods related to the hidden Christians. Visiting around midday tends to be less crowded, allowing for a relaxed look around.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. There are fewer tour buses around midday, so the museum tends to be relatively quiet.
