About this spot

This port serves as the gateway to the Hondo district, the heart of Amakusa City, and it is also the main venue for tonight's fireworks festival. From the quay, the calm waters of the Shiranui Sea (Yatsushiro Sea) (不知火海(八代海)) spread out, and the view of the ridgeline of Amakusa's islands lining the opposite shore is wonderfully open. The everyday scenery of fishing boats and ferries coming and going gives off the air of a typical Amakusa port town. Checking the venue's layout and likely viewing spots during the day will make claiming a spot at night go more smoothly. Restaurants and fresh fish shops are dotted along the road running beside the port, so it's also a good idea to scout out dinner options as you stroll.

Tips

About a 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk from the Amakusa Christian Museum (天草市立天草キリシタン館). On the day of the fireworks, spot-claiming begins from evening, so getting a feel for the viewing area during the day is reassuring. Parking lots along the port are likely to fill up from evening onward, so if driving, park early.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The afternoon hours, when the sea surface sparkles, offer an especially beautiful view.
