A symbol of Reihoku Town, this historic castle ruin sits on a hill overlooking Tomioka Bay (富岡湾). It is known as the shogunate stronghold that withstood the attacks of the rebel forces during the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion (Amakusa Rebellion) of 1637, and stone walls and reconstructed buildings remain today. From the observation deck at the ruins, you can take in the blue waters of the Amakusa Strait (天草灘), Tomioka Bay, and Tomioka Port (富岡港), where tonight's fireworks will launch, making it an excellent viewpoint for getting a sense of Reihoku Town's overall layout. Taking in this view in daylight makes the fireworks at night feel even more special. It is maintained as a castle-ruins park, so families can stroll around easily.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from Tomioka Port (富岡港), or under 5 minutes by car. Admission is free. The sun is strong up on the hill, so don't forget a hat and sunscreen. Some sections underfoot are unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Take a short rest on a bench at the observation deck before heading to your next stop.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. On a clear day, the blue of the sea stands out most, offering a wonderful view.
