The Kaga Onsen Village Summer Cooling Fireworks Festival in Katayamazu Onsen is a nightly summer tradition held for about 10 minutes starting around 9pm, every night from Saturday, August 1 through Sunday, August 30, 2026. The fireworks are launched from over Lake Shibayama, and a major highlight is the upside-down fireworks (逆さ花火), where the calm lake surface reflects the light of the fireworks exactly as they appear. The composition where the silhouette of the Ukimido (浮御堂) hall floating on the lake overlaps with the large bursts of fireworks is a picture-like scene found only in Katayamazu Onsen. Though about 200 shells is a compact number, the 10 minutes of nonstop launches make for a dense, satisfying show. Savor a Kaga summer night to the fullest in this fantastical space created by the lights of the hot-spring town's ryokan and their reflections on the lake.

Tips

The event may be canceled or postponed in bad weather, so check the official announcement from Kaga City or the Katayamazu Onsen Tourism Association for whether it will go ahead that day. After the fireworks end, parking lots around the lakeshore and roads in the hot-spring town get crowded, so rather than moving right away, lingering at the lakeshore to enjoy the afterglow before heading home makes it easier to avoid traffic jams. Since the festival is held every night through the following days as well, consider trying again the next day if the weather is bad.

Best time to visit

Time your visit to the 9:00pm-9:10pm show. Be seated on a leisure sheet in a spot with a view of the lake surface 15-20 minutes before the start.
