The Iizuka Nōryō Fireworks Festival (飯塚納涼花火大会) is the leading fireworks display of the Chikuhō region, launched from Nakanoshima on the Onga River. About 7,000 shells color the night sky over the course of 1 hour and 30 minutes, and from the riverside viewing area you can experience the thrill of fireworks blooming almost directly overhead. The way the fireworks' light shimmers and reflects on the river's surface is a highlight unique to riverside displays. Coming in late September, the timing carries the mood of summer's end giving way to autumn, and enjoying the fireworks in the cooling night breeze leaves a lasting impression. The moment the finale's rapid-fire bursts fill both river and sky with light is the climax of the day.

Tips

The event may be canceled or postponed in case of bad weather, so check Iizuka City's official announcement on the day to confirm whether it will go ahead. Roads and parking lots around the venue get extremely crowded after the show ends. If using public transportation, JR Shin-Iizuka Station (JR新飯塚駅) is the nearest stop; since it gets crowded right after the finale, it's safer to wait a bit before heading over. The riverbank is dark on the way back, so keep your phone light or a small flashlight handy.

Best time to visit

Timed to the event hours of 8:00-9:30 p.m. Try to be seated 15-20 minutes before the start so you can check out the venue across the river beforehand.
