About this spot

Nakanoshima, a sandbar on the Onga River (遠賀川) flowing through Iizuka City, is tonight's fireworks launch site. Spots along the riverside viewing area fill up early, so the key is to spread out your picnic sheet during the evening. In late September, this stretch of the Onga River also tends to have a lot of insects around this time, so use insect repellent while you cool off in the evening air. The breeze crossing the river feels pleasant, and as the trees on the opposite bank darken, anticipation for the fireworks builds. With food stalls lined up nearby at this hour, the whole venue is wrapped in festival excitement.

Tips

To avoid the crowds in the viewing area, secure your spot at least an hour before the show starts. Parts of the riverbank are grassy or gravelly, so a thick picnic sheet is more comfortable. Check the location of nearby restrooms while it's still light so you're not caught off guard after dark.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 10 minutes. Watching the river's surface shift to indigo after sunset makes a wonderful appetizer before the fireworks.
