Kitakata City (喜多方市) is known nationwide as a town of kura storehouses, and a wide variety of storehouse styles, from white plaster walls to brick and namako-kabe (checkered plaster) walls, survive throughout the city. Kitakata Kura no Sato (喜多方市蔵の里) is a facility where relocated and restored storehouses can be viewed all in one place, offering an easy introduction to their structure and history. Simply walking the grounds conveys the atmosphere of how merchant households once lived, in a calm and settled mood. It's within walking distance of Kitakata Station (喜多方駅), making it a perfect first stop of the day. Even on the day of the fireworks festival, mornings and early afternoons remain relatively uncrowded for a relaxed visit.

Tips

About 15 minutes on foot from Kitakata Station (喜多方駅), or take the city loop bus. Admission is around 300 yen for adults (subject to change, check the official information). Parking available. After your visit, exploring the surrounding storehouse streets makes the outing even more enjoyable.
