Nikkobashi River Green Space Open Plaza (日橋川緑地自由広場), the special venue for tonight's fireworks festival, is an open lawn park spread along the Nikkobashi River (日橋川). The water's surface is close by, and toward evening a pleasant river breeze blows through. On the day of the fireworks festival, food stalls set up nearby, so grabbing yakisoba or shaved ice while staking out your spot is a great way to spend the time. As the sun begins to lower, spectators start gathering on the lawn, so arrive by around 5pm to secure a good spot. Even before the fireworks begin, the sight of Aizu's (会津) evening sky reflected on the river's surface is beautiful enough on its own.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from Kitakata Station (喜多方駅). Roads around the area get congested on the day of the fireworks festival, so check public transportation options or parking near the venue in advance. Check restroom locations during the day. After sunset, footing along the riverbank gets dark, so a small light is reassuring to have.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours 15 minutes. The evening river breeze is at its most pleasant, and the sunset view is unique to this time of day
