A symbol of Aizu-Wakamatsu, this castle is known as an "impregnable fortress" for enduring about a month of siege warfare during the Boshin War. The current keep was rebuilt in 1965 and underwent Heisei-era renovations to restore the rare red-tiled exterior found nowhere else in Japan, matching the original Bakumatsu period appearance. Inside, a local history museum showcases Aizu's history and White Tiger Unit materials; climbing to the top floor rewards you with a sweeping panorama of the Aizu Basin's cityscape and Mount Bandai. The surrounding stone walls, moat, and expansive castle park are equally impressive, with features like the samurai-used stone steps and high stone walls sparking lively conversations among history-loving grandparents. The afternoon at this castle is the highlight of your three-generation historical journey.

Tips

Approximately 5 minutes by car from Oyakuen, or a 5-minute walk from the "Tsuruga Castle Entrance" bus stop on the loop bus. The keep features stairs for ascending and descending, so encourage grandparents to take breaks as needed. The castle park is free to explore, and skipping the keep climb is an option. Numerous shops and benches make it easy to take breaks, ideal for three-generation visits.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Afternoon lighting makes the red tiles photograph beautifully. The views from the top floor are especially stunning on clear days.
