Akita Prefecture's public aquarium stands on the western coast of the Oga Peninsula, facing the Sea of Japan. The Oga Sea main tank, home to approximately 40 species and 2,000 fish, is well worth seeing, allowing visitors to observe everything from rocky shore creatures to migratory fish at once. The star attractions are undoubtedly the polar bears, whose diving and swimming can be observed up close—a huge hit with children. Unique to this facility is a dedicated exhibit on hatahata, Akita's prefectural fish, which offers insights into the connection between local seas and food culture. You can also enjoy the charming sight of seals and penguins. The restaurant and rest areas offer views of the Sea of Japan, making a lunch break here—watching the waves crash on the shore—a special experience unique to this aquarium.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Namahage Hall along the coastal road, with free parking. The facility has a restaurant, so lunch here is efficient. Check event times such as the polar bear feeding time upon entry to avoid missing them. Midday on weekends and holidays can get crowded, so allow plenty of time.
Best time to visit
About 2 hours required. Starting around 12:30 p.m. with lunch makes it easier to catch feeding-time events.
