About this spot

Built in 1884 (Meiji 17) as the prefecture's official guest house, this wooden Japanese-style building is designated a National Important Cultural Property. It consists of three buildings, the main hall, annex, and tea house, and the highlights are the intricate design that gathers the refinement of the Meiji era and the well-tended Japanese garden. Since it is adjacent to Maebashi Park (前橋公園), you can easily stop by along with your stroll through the park. You can see up close the interior of a Meiji-era guest house building, something you don't often get the chance to see, and it is also a good opportunity for children to experience the construction of old buildings firsthand.

Tips

Located in a corner of Maebashi Park, right by foot from the park. Admission is 210 yen for adults and free for junior high school students and under (this is the fee as of 2024, so please check before visiting). Some rooms inside require you to remove your shoes, so footwear that is easy to slip on and off is comfortable. The visit is self-guided, and about 30-40 minutes is a good rule of thumb.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. During the hours when the midday sun is strong, touring the cool interior of the building also serves as a nice break.
