Shimabara Outer Port, the venue for the Shimabara Onsen Gamadasu Fireworks Festival, is an open harbor where ferries to Kumamoto come and go. Beyond the horizon of the Ariake Sea, you can see the mountains of Kumamoto on the opposite shore, and on clear days even the peaks of Mount Aso, a spectacular location. In the evening, the sea breeze at the harbor feels pleasant, and the moment the setting sun dyes the Ariake Sea orange is especially beautiful. Spread out food from a stall or elsewhere for dinner on a leisure sheet to hold your spot, and enjoy watching the ever-changing colors of the sea and sky as you wait for the show to begin. On the day of the fireworks festival, viewers start gathering from early on, so it's best to secure your viewing spot before sunset.

Tips

About a 15-20 minute walk from the Town Where Carp Swim, or taking a taxi is convenient. The area gets crowded on the day of the fireworks festival, so get your food early. Check the location of the harbor restrooms while it's still light out. Shops around Shimabara Outer Port can form lines before the show starts.
