Spreading along the Chikuma River, Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen is one of Nagano Prefecture's leading hot spring resorts. The calm streets typical of a hot spring town, dating back to the Meiji era, together with rows of willows along the river, create just the right atmosphere for a summer stroll. The hot spring town also has foot bath spots you can use for free or at low cost, perfect for refreshing feet tired from walking before the night of fireworks. Tonight's fireworks venue along the Chikuma River is right nearby, so checking out the venue's atmosphere during the day makes securing a spot at night go more smoothly. Shops offering hot-spring-town treats and local ingredients are also scattered along the main street.

Tips

About a 5-10 minute walk from Togura Station on the Shinano Railway. Check the location and hours of the foot baths at the hot spring area's information boards or tourism association. Streets nearby get crowded from evening onward on the day of the fireworks, so decide on a parking spot early. Stopping for a hot spring bath on the way home after the fireworks end is also an option.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The time just before evening, as it starts to cool down a little, is comfortable for strolling
