About this spot

Suzaka City prospered from the raw silk industry from the late Edo period through the Meiji and Taisho eras, and many merchant houses and storehouses from that time still remain throughout the town. Walking the streets around Honmachi and Shinmachi, you will find a continuous streetscape of white-walled storehouses and lattice-doored merchant houses, evoking the rich commercial culture of Shinshu. Unlike an area purpose-built for tourism, the charm unique to this town is that history still lives on within a community where people continue their daily lives. Before the fireworks display, take a leisurely walk to feel the true face of the town of Suzaka. It is also close to Suzaka Station, the starting point for the stroll, so you can walk light with minimal luggage.

Tips

Within a 5- to 10-minute walk of Nagano Dentetsu Suzaka Station. Leaving any unnecessary luggage in a coin locker at the station will make your stroll easier. Viewing the exteriors of the merchant houses is free. The sun can be strong at this time of day, so do not forget a hat and to stay hydrated. Since the town gets crowded from the evening onward on the day of the fireworks, this is a precious chance to walk at a relaxed pace.

About 1 hour 15 minutes. There are few tourists in the early afternoon, so you can stroll the storehouse district at a relaxed pace
