About this spot

Located inside Garyu Park in Suzaka City, this municipal zoo has low admission fees and has long been a beloved go-to spot for families. The star attraction is the red panda, whose adorable appearance has won it many fans. Though compact in size, the zoo also has plenty of exhibits where you can get close to a variety of other animals, keeping children entertained without getting bored. The adjoining Garyu Park is a lush urban park centered on a pond, ideal for resting after visiting the zoo. As the daytime portion of the fireworks outing, it is just the right place for families to spend a relaxed afternoon.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from Nagano Dentetsu Suzaka Station, or take the town's circular bus. Admission is very affordable at around 150 yen for adults (check the official Suzaka City website for the latest rates). In summer, take full precautions against heatstroke with a hat and plenty of water. There are benches and pavilions within Garyu Park, so after the zoo you can rest in the shade while planning your next move.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The sun is strong in the early afternoon, so it is more comfortable to focus on the shadier areas
