A museum unique to Shinano Town, centered on fossils and skeletons of Naumann's elephant and giant deer found during excavations of the Lake Nojiri lakebed. Using abundant genuine specimens and models, it clearly conveys the fact that large ancient creatures once lived on the shores of what is now Lake Nojiri around 40,000 years ago. For children, it's a place where fossils just as striking as dinosaur bones make their eyes light up, and adults too will find their imagination stirred by the ancient form of Lake Nojiri. The compact exhibition hall makes it easy to visit in just the right amount of time before lunch. Once you know that the lake where fireworks will rise tonight was once a paradise for giant beasts long ago, tonight's fireworks are sure to feel even more meaningful.

Tips

A few minutes on foot from the Nojirikohan bus stop. Admission is around 500 yen for adults (please check the official website in advance). The museum is air-conditioned, so it's also a handy place to cool off during the hot midday hours. The museum shop carries goods related to fossil excavation experiences, making it a good spot to find souvenirs for kids.
