Sitting at an elevation of 653m, Lake Nojiri is known as a cool retreat where refreshing air lingers even in midsummer. Restaurants and shops dot the lakeshore, letting you take a leisurely lunch while gazing out at the lake. The view of Mt. Kurohime and Mt. Myoko across the water has a generous sense of scale unique to Shinano Town. After lunch, stroll the lakeshore for a while and scope out a spot for tonight's fireworks viewing so your evening plans go smoothly. Simply sitting on a bench in the shade with the lake breeze is enough to feel like a true highland resort.

Tips

There are parking lots around the lakeshore, but they get crowded from the evening on the day of the fireworks festival. Finishing lunch around 1 p.m. tends to go relatively smoothly. Some shops and eateries along the lake sell out in the evening, so it's a good idea to stock up on extra snacks and drinks around this time.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The lake surface is calmest and the scenery most striking at midday
