This is the 57th Tsugaru Fireworks Festival (Toronagashi), held on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Hakucho Fureai Plaza on the banks of the Hirakawa River. Following the Toronagashi lantern floating from 6:30 p.m., the launch of about 5,000 fireworks begins at 7 p.m. (the event runs 7:00-8:30 p.m.). Large fireworks blooming above the gentle flow of the Hirakawa River also cast light on the water's surface, creating a beautiful scene where water and light intertwine with the lantern lights. The sound echoes along the river, and the power of the launch sound is also one of the highlights. Fireworks viewed at the nature-rich Hirakawa riverbank, also known as a spot where swans gather, carry a charm befitting a Tsugaru summer tradition. The moments building toward the finale will become a memory of summer etched in the whole family's hearts.

Whether the event proceeds may be decided on the day depending on the weather (for 2026, the organizer, the Fujisaki Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has announced that the final decision will be posted on its website by 3 p.m. on August 20). Be sure to check the official announcement. Since return traffic and transportation get crowded afterward, it's recommended to enjoy the afterglow for a while after the finale before moving. Prepare a small light since it gets dark underfoot, and travel home safely. Since the following day is a weekday, it's reassuring to plan your return trip in advance with children's bedtimes in mind.

Best time to visit

Timed to the 6:30 p.m. lantern floating and the 7:00 p.m. fireworks launch. Secure a spot with a sheet 20-30 minutes before it begins, and choosing a position where you can see the river lets you also enjoy the fireworks' reflection.
