Panoramic View of the Coin Sand Drawing and Seto Inland Sea from the Observation Platform, Commemorative Photos

About this spot

Looking down from the observation platform built on the hill of Kotohiki Park, you'll see the spectacular scene of a massive coin-shaped sand drawing "Enma Daikoku" with a diameter of approximately 122 meters carved into the white sand of Ariake Beach, appearing in an almost perfect circle. This sand drawing, said to have been created overnight to welcome the feudal lord in 1633, is an iconic symbol of Kannonji. There is also a legend that "those who see this coin sand drawing will enjoy good health, longevity, and financial abundance," and it is known as an auspicious commemorative photo spot. From the observation platform, you can further see across to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and a photo capturing both the sea and the sand drawing in one frame will be a memorable keepsake for the family. The slope of the hill is equipped with walking paths, allowing comfortable walking even with small children.

Venue:

Shells: approx. 3,000

Tips

Tips

Approximately 20 minutes on foot from JR Kannonji Station (観音寺駅), or about 5 minutes by car. There is a parking lot within the park (on the summer fireworks day, it becomes crowded from early hours). The walking path to the observation platform has little shade, so bring a hat and stay hydrated during the day. The sand drawing can be viewed from ground level as well, but the full outline of the coin shape is only visible from the observation platform.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. On a clear afternoon, the outline of the sand drawing is most sharply visible.
