The Shibushi Castle Ruins (志布志城跡), a National Historic Site, are a compound mountain castle made up of four adjoining castle sites: Uchijo, Matsuo-jo, Shinjo, and Takajo. Among these, the Uchijo and Matsuo-jo ruins retain deeply cut dry moats and roughly stacked stone walls in good condition, conveying the appearance of a medieval southern Kyushu fortress to this day. Walking along the well-maintained paths, you can trace the layout of the old defenses — a treat for history-loving adults, and the sheer scale of the moats and walls also makes a strong impression on kids. Surrounded by trees, the castle ruins stay cool and offer just the right amount of shade for a daytime walk. Come experience this quiet, deep side of Shibushi, a contrast to the excitement of the fireworks display.

Tips

About a 10-minute drive from Ariake Seaside Park (有明海浜公園). Paths within the castle ruins are maintained, but there are steps and slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Admission is free. Information boards are set up throughout, and checking them alongside a map makes things easier to follow — taking photos of the on-site boards also helps as you explore.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. With plenty of shade from the trees, it stays relatively cool even for a daytime walk
