About this spot

Kotohikihama Kaketsu Beach (琴引浜掛津海水浴場), spreading along Kyotango City (京丹後市), is open in 2026 from Saturday, July 4 to Sunday, August 23, with swimming hours from 9:00 to 17:00. It is known as a rare singing sand beach where the sand makes a sound as you walk, and it is also famous as the first beach in the world designated non-smoking in order to protect that sound. Swimming is free, and with showers (cold water free, hot water 100 yen for 90 seconds), restrooms, changing rooms and one beach shop, the facilities let even first-time families spend the day with peace of mind. Gazing at the white sand and clear sea, enjoy the summer of Kyotango to the fullest until evening, from playing at the water's edge to playing in the sand.

Tips

Parking is 2,000 yen per day for a standard car. Summer sand gets hot in the sun, so beach sandals are essential. Showers are free for cold water but hot water costs 100 yen for 90 seconds, so having small change is reassuring. To protect the singing sand, smoking implements may not be brought onto the beach. Swimming hours end at 17:00, so allowing time to change and wrapping up around 16:45 is recommended.

Best time to visit

From about half past one in the afternoon the sunlight softens a little, making it the time slot for plenty of swimming until evening
