Sumadera Temple (須磨寺)
Flow of the course
About this spot
About a 10-minute walk from Sanyo Sumadera Station, Sumadera Temple is known as an ancient temple of the Shingon sect and is renowned nationwide as a temple associated with "the Battle of Ichino Valley" during the Gempei War. The temple grounds preserve numerous historic sites and treasures related to Taira no Atsumori and Kumagae Naozane, and the tree-lined approach creates a refreshingly cool atmosphere with lush greenery. As you tour the main hall and other temple buildings, you can also touch upon the historical background of Suma's sea, which awaits you next. This is a fitting starting point for a summer day. The spacious grounds mean you won't get bored even if you stroll leisurely with children.
Tips
Within walking distance from Sanyo Sumadera Station or JR Suma Station. Summer mornings are relatively comfortable with plenty of shade, but don't forget to hydrate. The temple grounds have some stairs in places, so it's recommended to focus on the flat approach path if using a stroller.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Early morning, just after opening, has fewer visitors and allows for quiet worship.
