About this spot

Asago Mago-ji Temple, built on the slopes of Mount Shigi, is the head temple of Bishamonten (the deity of wealth) worship, with a spiritual lineage connecting to Prince Shotoku. The large papier-mâché tiger at the entrance to the approach path is a classic photo spot and a popular destination where children are drawn to it. The grounds spread across a lush mountain valley, and the views from the red lacquered pagoda and main hall are worth seeing. If you only visit for prayer, it can be completed in a short time, making it just the right scale for a morning before the pool. Visiting early in the morning when the air is crisp allows you to enjoy the quiet of the mountain at leisure.

Tips

From the parking lot to the main hall, there is a gentle uphill slope, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Some areas within the grounds are unpaved, so choose paths suitable for strollers to move smoothly. Summer has limited shade, so it's reassuring to bring a hat and drinks.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40-60 minutes required. Morning visits before temperatures rise are most comfortable.
