The Sacred Sanctuary in a Cliff-Side Cave and Lucky Stone Wish-Throwing at a Sea Shrine
About this spot
A rare shrine nationwide where the vermillion-painted main sanctuary is enshrined within a cave carved by waves on the cliff face jutting into Hyuga-nada. The distinctive "descending shrine" (kudari-miya) form involves descending stone steps to pray. According to mythology, Toyotama Hime, daughter of the sea god, gave birth to a divine child at this location, making the shrine beloved for blessings of marriage, safe childbirth, and child-rearing. The signature attraction is throwing luck stones (unidama) at the sacred turtle stone (kame-ishi) in the cliff below the sanctuary—men throw with their left hand, women with their right, and legend has it that wishes come true if the stone lands in the hollow on the turtle's back. The dramatic vista of rugged rock formations and deep blue sea below is breathtaking, offering both worship and scenic views—Hinami's most renowned destination.
Tips
From the parking lot to the sanctuary involves many stone steps up and down, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. The path along the cliff can be windy, so secure your hat carefully. Luck stones are available at the shrine office. Weekends see crowded pathways, so morning visits are more comfortable.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The morning light makes the cave's vermillion sanctuary and blue ocean pop distinctly.
