View the Impressive Geological Cross-Section Carved with Volcanic History
About this spot
A striped cliff about 630 meters long that appears along a road near Oshima Park. You can witness up close the layers of volcanic ash that accumulated and built up through the eruptions of Mihara Volcano, creating a dramatic landscape unique to Izu Oshima Island. The baumkuchen-like striped pattern is also photogenic and is popular as a natural teaching material for children to understand how a volcanic island is formed. The convenience of viewing from a nearby observation space makes it easy to include in your itinerary.

Tips

You can view it from the observation space along the road. There's little shade, so take sun protection measures even for a short summer visit. It's a road with traffic, so keep children's hands held securely while viewing.
