About this spot

Appearing along the road not far from Oshima Park, this striped cliff face stretches for about 630 meters. It offers a close-up view unique to Izu Oshima, showing layer upon layer of volcanic ash deposited by eruptions of Mount Mihara. The Baumkuchen-like striped pattern makes for great photos, and it's also a popular natural teaching tool for showing children how a volcanic island was formed. Being able to take it in quickly from the viewing area also makes it easy to fit into your itinerary.

Tips

You can view it from a viewing area along the road. There's little shade, so take sun precautions even for a short visit in summer. Since it's a road with passing traffic, hold your children's hands firmly while viewing.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. A morning stop makes for just the right break
