Next stop: Learn the history of the Battle of Okinawa and think about peaceAbout this spot
A park spreading across the hill of Mabuni (摩文仁) in Itoman City, in the southern part of Okinawa's main island. Known as the place where the Battle of Okinawa came to an end in the closing days of the Pacific War, it is home to the Cornerstone of Peace (平和の礎), engraved with the names of the war dead, and to a museum. From the top of the hill you can take in the blue sea and sky at a glance, reflecting on Okinawa's history in a quiet stretch of time. There is also a grassy open space, which suits a little movement after visiting the museum. It is the perfect place to stop in the morning, before heading to Nashiro Beach (名城ビーチ), for the family to spend time learning Okinawa's history.
Tips
There are several parking lots inside the park, so visiting by car is convenient. The sun is strong outdoors, so do not forget a hat and to stay hydrated. The museum's exhibits deal with a somewhat heavy theme, so adjust how long you stay according to your children's ages.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. Early morning sees relatively settled crowds
