A shrine enshrined atop the cliff looking down on Naminoue Beach (波の上ビーチ) in Naha City, said to be the most prestigious of the Eight Shrines of Ryukyu (琉球八社). The East China Sea spreads out beyond the torii gate, and simply climbing the steps up to the main hall makes for a pleasant walk. Locally it is loved as a shrine rooted in daily life, for New Year visits and Shichi-Go-San celebrations, and it is a spot representing Naha that many tourists visit as well. The precincts are not overly large, so families with small children can pay their respects in a short time without strain. It is the perfect place to start the day and settle your mind while gazing at the sea before playing at the pool.
Tips
Parking spaces are limited, so during busy hours it is reassuring to also consider nearby coin parking. There are steps and slopes, so folding up a stroller and carrying your child makes moving around smoother. The sea view from the precincts photographs beautifully, so the soft light of morning is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 30 to 40 minutes. Early morning has few people, and the breeze off the sea feels pleasant
