The head shrine of all Shirahige shrines nationwide, with a vermillion torii gate standing in Lake Biwa. Founded roughly 1,900 years ago, it ranks among Ōmi's oldest shrines and enshrines Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto, the god of guidance. Known as "Ōmi's Itsukushima," the landscape of the torii in the lake is recognized as one of Shiga's most spectacular views. The time when morning light catches the water's surface, making it glimmer, is particularly beautiful, as the lake, torii, and distant mountains form a scene like a single painting. It is also popular as a power spot, celebrated for benefits of longevity and good fortune. The grounds feature a viewing platform overlooking the lake, allowing families with children to safely appreciate the torii. It is the perfect starting point for your drive and an ideal spot for family worship and commemorative photographs.
Tips
Located along National Route 161 on the western shore, with a free parking lot in the shrine grounds. Crossing the National Route between the main building and lake is extremely dangerous and forbidden; view the torii from the viewing area on the shrine side. It takes about 40 minutes on foot from JR Ōmi-Takashima Station, making a car convenient. In the morning there are fewer visitors, allowing you to take photos leisurely.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. Early morning hours when sunrise illuminates the lake surface and the torii offer the most spectacular views.
