About 15 minutes by car from Maehama Beach, Hara Castle Ruins in Minamiarima-cho, Minamishimabara City is known as the stage of the Shimabara–Amakusa Rebellion (Shimabara no Ran) in the early Edo period, and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 as part of ‘Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region.’ Although the former keep and turrets no longer remain, the stone walls and the site of the main keep built on the hillside still spread out, maintained as a scenic historical park overlooking the Ariake Sea. The grassy main keep area is easy to walk, making it appealing even for families with small children. It's a perfect starting point to experience history while warming up for the sea ahead.

Tips

A paved path continues from the parking lot to the main keep site, walkable even with a stroller. There is little shade, so bring a hat and drinks in summer. Studying up beforehand at the adjacent Arima Christian Heritage Museum (admission fee) makes the history easier for children to understand as you walk.
