About 20 minutes by car from Hara Castle Ruins, Setsumezaki Lighthouse, located at the southernmost tip of the Shimabara Peninsula, is a viewing spot offering a panorama of the Amakusa Islands, the Ariake Sea, and Tachibana Bay. The area around the lighthouse is maintained as a park, with a promenade continuing along the coast where you can feel the sea breeze while taking in the view. On clear days you can see all the way to the Amakusa region of Kumamoto Prefecture across the water, and it's a place where you can sense the expanse of the sea leading to Maehama Beach, where you'll soon be swimming. The photogenic view is also recommended for family travel photos.
Tips
It's a few minutes' walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse observation area. Some sections of the ground are unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes. There are areas without fences, so keep a close eye on small children.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. Morning, before the sunlight gets strong, is recommended.
