This stone museum stands adjacent to Sengan-en, housed in one of Japan's oldest surviving Western-style machinery factories. It was the site of the Shusehkan Project, through which the Satsuma Domain of the late Edo period embraced Western technology and undertook ventures in shipbuilding and textile manufacturing. The building itself is a UNESCO World Heritage component asset. The heavy masonry exterior with its arched windows is striking in appearance. Inside, through exhibits on the Shimazu family's history, the progression of the Shusehkan Project, and exquisite Satsuma cut glass, you can trace the story of how Satsuma led Japan into early modernization. Combined with a stroll through the Sengan-en gardens, the manufacturing heritage that lies within the daimyo's garden comes alive in three dimensions.

Tips

The entrance is close to Sengan-en, and combined admission tickets are often available—confirm at the ticket window. Taking time to read the detailed explanations will deepen your understanding. Nearby craft halls also feature Satsuma cut glass exhibits and sales.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes required. It's most efficient to visit immediately after finishing your stroll through Sengan-en.
