Japan's Oldest Shrine Architecture at a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Adorable Rabbit Charms

A UNESCO World Heritage shrine nestled in the quiet foothills on the east bank of the Uji River, accessible by crossing the Asagiri Bridge. The main hall, said to have been built in the late Heian period, is designated a National Treasure as Japan's oldest remaining shrine architecture, while the worship hall is also a National Treasure, preserving Kamakura-era shinden-zukuri architectural style. The compact grounds feature "Kirinomizu" (桐原水), one of the seven famous waters of Uji and the only one still flowing naturally today, with pristinely clear air that invites a deep breath. Named after the shrine's deity Ujiwakairatsuko, and drawing from the ancient name of Uji—"Ujimichi" (菟道), the character for rabbit (菟)—the shrine is famous among women travelers for its rabbit-shaped charms and amulets. The palm-sized rabbit charms are perfect for lining up and photographing together, making them ideal for creating travel memories.

Tips

About 10 minutes' walk from Keihan Uji Station, or about 15 minutes from Byodoin via a pleasant walk across the island and Asagiri Bridge in the Uji River. Admission is free, and the compact grounds make for a quick visit. Rabbit charms, amulets, and shrine stamps are available during shrine office hours (through late afternoon). Stone steps and gravel paths are present, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The approach path called "Sawarabicho Michi" (さわらびの道) has pleasant shade and leads naturally to the next destination, the Genji Monogatari Museum.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Even in the afternoon, it remains relatively peaceful, and you can leisurely enjoy the shrine's dappled sunlight and serene atmosphere.
