Savor Japan's Most Acclaimed Garden and Masterpieces by Taikan Yokoyama

About this spot

An art museum renowned for its collection of masterpieces by Taikan Yokoyama, a master of modern Japanese painting, and its vast 50,000-tsubo Japanese garden. Consistently ranked as Japan's best by an American Japanese garden specialist magazine over many years, the meticulously maintained gardens – including dry landscape gardens and white sand with green pine gardens – display changing beauty throughout the seasons. The building features clever designs such as the 'living framed paintings' where large windows frame the garden like a painting, and the 'living hanging scrolls' where an alcove wall is removed to view the garden. On rainy days, the contrast between wet green foliage and white sand becomes even more striking and beautiful.

Tips

Free large parking lot available, and free shuttle buses operate from JR Yasuki Station. The tour route is long indoors, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Window-side seating at the tea room overlooking the garden is popular, so consider taking a brief rest there if seats are available.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 2 hours. Morning hours are relatively quiet, allowing you to fully savor the garden views through the windows.
