Explore the post-town of the Nakasendo with its distinctive cliff-hanging houses

About this spot

A post-town on the Nakasendo known for its distinctive landscape where houses jut out along the steep cliffs of the Kiso River. The upper and lower towns retain latticed storefronts and earthen-walled warehouses from the Edo period, allowing visitors to feel the atmosphere of traveling merchants passing through. From the riverside promenade, you can enjoy the unique Kisofukushima scenery of houses jutting out from the cliffs. Restaurants and souvenir shops dot the area, perfect for taking breaks during your walk. The barrier and mansion you'll visit today are also located in this post-town, making this the perfect starting point for a day tracing the history of the Kiso route.

Tips
