About this spot
An ancient temple founded with the relocation of the imperial capital to Heijo in 710, closely connected to the Fujiwara clan. The national treasure five-story pagoda is one of Nara's iconic symbols, visible from anywhere within the temple grounds. With many points of interest including the Chukondo and Tokondo halls, the National Treasure Museum allows you to view precious Buddhist statues up close, including the famous Ashura statue. Located near Naramachi, it's a must-see spot at the center of Nara sightseeing.

About 10 minutes walk from Naramachi. Temple grounds are free to walk, but separate admission is required for the National Treasure Museum and Chukondo. Summer sunlight is intense, so bring a parasol or hat for comfort.

About 45 minutes. Early afternoon is ideal for photographing the five-story pagoda.
