About this spot

Also called Nara-machi, this is Nara's old commercial district where townhouses dating back to the Edo period still stand today. Lined along narrow streets are souvenir shops, cafes, and eateries offering Nara's famous street food. The sight of traditional townhouses with Jizou figurines hung from their eaves—a charm unique to this town—adds to its charm. Start your day leisurely by grabbing lunch or snacks while absorbing the atmosphere of this ancient capital.

Tips

About 15 minutes walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. Popular shops can get crowded, so early arrival around lunchtime is recommended. In summer, some streets have little shade, so stay hydrated throughout.
