About this spot

This is one of the provincial temples (kokubunji) built nationwide by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu in the Nara period, and it served as the center of Buddhism in the Tohoku region at the time. Today it is maintained as a historic site park, where the foundation stones and remains of the halls give a sense of the scale of the original temple complex. The adjacent Yakushido Hall stands nearby, and strolling through the quiet, calm atmosphere lets you forget the bustle of the city. It is also close to Kasumime Camp (霞目駐屯地), where fireworks will be launched tonight, making it a perfect way to close out your historical walk.

Tips

Accessible on foot from JR Miyaginohara Station (宮城野原駅) on the Tohoku Main Line. Admission to the grounds is free. Some areas have little shade in summer, so remember to stay hydrated.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The calm afternoon hours are ideal for a leisurely visit.
